Canada Vehicle Market Insights

What the inventory of 3,096 Canadian dealerships says about asking prices, supply, price cuts and how fast vehicles leave lots, by province, brand, model year and fuel, with the weeks since tracking began as history. Figures are asking prices on dealership websites, not transaction prices; see how to read this.

Week by week

New listings and vehicles leaving lots each week, with the price cuts dealers made and how deep they went. The first weeks reflect dealerships being added to tracking as much as the market: read the series against the number of dealerships tracked.

How to read this

What the figures are and are not.

  • Source. The inventory pages of the tracked dealerships’ own websites, read regularly. A vehicle is counted once even when several dealerships list it.
  • Prices are asking prices, as listed, in Canadian dollars; they say nothing about what was paid. Medians are used throughout, so a few mispriced listings do not move them.
  • A price cut is a listing asking less now than when it was first seen. The median cut is among listings with one.
  • Left lots is a vehicle that disappeared from its dealership’s site, counted the day a reading found it gone: sold, mostly, but also moved, withdrawn or re-listed under another number. It lags the sale by up to a day.
  • Days listed counts from when tracking first saw the vehicle, so a vehicle listed before its dealership was added looks younger than it is. The same caution applies to the first weeks of the history.
  • Coverage is what is tracked, not the whole market: dealerships are added over time, and a dealership whose site cannot be read drops out until it can.
  • Fuel is as the listing describes it; “Unknown” means the page did not say.
