How to read this

  • Asking prices on dealership websites, in Canadian dollars; not what buyers paid. Used and certified pre-owned vehicles only.
  • Like for like. Listings are grouped by make, model, model year and province. A day's change is the average change across those groups, each weighted by how many listings it had on both days, and only groups with at least three listings both days count. A dealership joining, or more SUVs on the lots, does not move it.
  • Mileage: each listing counts at its price as if it had no mileage, taking 2% off for every 10,000 km, so a low-mileage arrival or a high-mileage sale does not move its group. Listings that do not state mileage are left out.
  • What does move it: dealers changing their prices, and what arrives and leaves within a group. A vehicle also gets older as the months go by, so a slow fall is partly the usual depreciation, which is what a seller faces.
  • The 7- and 30-day changes are the index at the end of the span against its start, so every dealership counts from the day after it joined; the trend a month is fitted to the daily index once it has two weeks of history. While tracking is young the longest span shown is shorter than 30 days.
  • Misreads: a price more than two and a half times away from what its make, model and year typically ask is left out, and a single price change of more than 30% is taken for a misread being put right, not a dealer repricing, so it moves nothing. A kind of vehicle whose average jumps more than 15% overnight is left out of that day.
